Pay map and salary insights

Read the Pay map and Salary insights pages, and see where their salary figures come from.

Pay map and Salary insights are in the sidebar. Their figures come from salary ranges engineers add to their profiles and salary ranges on job listings. They reflect what people on Katara have entered, not a survey of the wider market.

Where the numbers come from

  • Engineers' expectations. Engineers can add a Min Salary, Max Salary and Salary Currency to their profile. Katara uses the midpoint of each range.
  • Job listings. Jobs with a salary range are counted the same way, using the midpoint.
  • Levels. Each engineer is grouped into a level, from Intern to Executive. Katara uses the Seniority on their profile. If that's empty, it uses the seniority on their roles, then their job titles, then how many years of experience they've listed.

Reading the Pay map

The Pay map shows salary data on a world map. You need to be signed in to see it. It only includes engineers who have a location on their profile. Engineers whose search status is invisible are not included.

To protect individuals, regions with fewer than three candidates are left off the map. If your filters match some candidates but no region has enough of them, the map says so.

Use Metric to choose what the colours show:

MetricWhat it shows
Expected payMedian expected salary by region.
Job payMedian salary offered by open jobs, by region.
Pay gapHow job offers compare with what candidates in the same region expect, as a percentage.
Talent supplyCandidates with a stated salary, by region.
Available nowShare of candidates open to starting now.
Remote appetiteShare of candidates open to remote or hybrid work.
Reply rateMedian share of recruiter openers that get a reply.

Use Filters to narrow the data. Profession, Skill and Level limit which candidates are counted. Switch between Countries, Regions and Cities to change how the map groups the data.

For pay metrics, extra drop-downs let you change:

  • The currency. With Local currency, colour bands stay in USD so regions can be compared, using the exchange rates named on the page. Pick a specific currency to count only salaries quoted in that currency.
  • The period. Show figures Per year, Per month or Per hour. These are converted from annual salaries.
  • The percentile. For Expected pay, choose the 10th, 25th, 50th (median), 75th or 90th percentile.

Click a city or region to see its details, including its top professions. Map style and Colour scheme only change how the map looks.

If you're an engineer, Add your salary takes you to the salary section of your profile settings.

Reading Salary insights

Salary insights shows the same kind of data as charts.

  1. If salaries are quoted in more than one currency, pick one at the top. Only salaries in that currency are shown. Nothing is converted.
  2. Choose Profiles for engineers' expectations, or Jobs for job listings.

The page then shows:

  • Overview. The Median, Mean, P10–P90 range, Min, Max and Count.
  • Distribution. How many salaries fall into each pay band, with a note on which band most of them sit in.
  • Salary Heatmap. Median salary by role and experience level, based on engineers' profiles. Use Filter by role to find a role. A cell shows No data when nobody matches.
