Signing in with a passkey

Add a passkey to sign in with Face ID, Touch ID or a security key instead of your password.

A passkey lets you sign in to Katara with Face ID, Touch ID or a security key instead of typing your password. Your device or password manager keeps the passkey, and you confirm it's you with your fingerprint, face, PIN or key.

Add a passkey

You need your Katara account password to add a passkey.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Under Security, click Passkeys.
  3. Click Add a passkey.
  4. Give it a Label you'll recognise later, such as "MacBook Touch ID".
  5. Enter your account password and click Continue.
  6. Follow your browser's prompt to create the passkey.

The passkey then appears in your list, with the date you added it and when you last used it. You can add more than one, for example one on your laptop and one on your phone.

Sign in with a passkey

  1. Go to the Katara sign-in page.
  2. Click Sign in with a passkey.
  3. Choose your passkey when your browser asks, and confirm with your fingerprint, face, PIN or key.

You don't need to type your email or password. If you use an authenticator app for two-factor authentication, signing in with a passkey doesn't ask for your 6-digit code.

The Sign in with a passkey button only appears in browsers that support passkeys.

Passkeys and two-factor authentication

If your team requires two-factor authentication, a passkey counts. You can add a passkey instead of setting up an authenticator app.

Remove a passkey

  1. Open Settings and click Passkeys.
  2. Click the bin icon next to the passkey you want to remove.
  3. Enter your account password and click Remove passkey.

You can't sign in with that passkey after you remove it. The remove option only appears when you have more than one passkey, so add a new one first if you want to replace your only passkey.

If something goes wrong

  • "That password did not match": you need your Katara password to add or remove a passkey. If you signed up with Google or don't remember your password, click Forgot password? on the sign-in page to set a new one.
  • "Couldn't sign in with your passkey": try again, and check you picked a passkey you saved for Katara. If it still fails, sign in with your password or Google instead.
  • No passkey button: your browser doesn't support passkeys. Update it, or try another browser.
  • Your company requires single sign-on: if your team requires single sign-on for your email domain, passkey sign-in stops working for you and you sign in through your company's identity provider instead. The team owner can still use their passkey.
