Deleting your account and your data

How to delete your Katara account, what gets removed, and what to do first.

You can delete your Katara account yourself from your settings. Deleting your account is permanent and can't be undone, so it's worth downloading a copy of your data first.

Before you delete

  • Download your data. Open Settings and click Danger Zone. Under Your data, click Request your data. Choose what to include and Katara emails you a link to download a copy.
  • Hand over any team you own. If you own a team that has other members, you can't delete your account yet. Transfer ownership to someone else, or remove all other members, first. See Inviting and managing team members.
  • Know your password. Katara asks for your password to confirm. If you signed up with Google or don't remember it, click Forgot password? on the sign-in page to set a new one.

Delete your account

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click Danger Zone.
  3. Under Account, click Delete Account.
  4. Read the summary of what will be removed.
  5. Click the red button three times. It reads Delete Account, then Tap again, then One more time.
  6. Under Confirm your password, enter your password.
  7. Click One more time to delete your account.

Katara signs you out. If something stops the deletion, such as a team you still own with members in it, you see a message explaining what to do instead.

What is removed

  • Your profile and personal information.
  • All projects and uploaded files.
  • Your settings and preferences.
  • Your passkeys, connected sign-in accounts and calendar connection.
  • Access to your account, for good.

If you have a recruiter account, Katara also:

  • Cancels any active subscriptions you pay for, including those for teams you own.
  • Deletes any team you own that has no other members.
  • Removes you from teams you belong to.

What stays, without your details

Some records are shared with other people, so Katara doesn't delete them outright. It removes your personal details instead, and keeps the rest for the reason given below.

What staysWhat changesWhy it stays
ConversationsYour name shows as "Deleted User" and nobody can send you new messages. The messages you sent stay readable to the person you spoke with for 12 months, then they are deleted. The conversation is also theirs. Removing your side straight away would leave them with a record that makes no sense.
Job applicationsYour name, contact details, CV and answers are erased. The team keeps a record that a candidate applied.
Applications where you were hiredYour CV is removed. The rest of the application stays. The hiring team needs a record of who they hired.
Interview feedback and scorecards you wroteShown as "Deleted User".They are part of the team's hiring record for another candidate.

Your account itself is closed for good. Katara replaces your email address with a placeholder, resets your password and removes your sign-in details, so nobody can sign in to it again and it can't be restored. An internal reference to the account remains so the records above still hold together.

Delete messages before you go

Messages you sent stay with the other person after you delete your account. If a message contains something you don't want kept, such as a phone number or details about your circumstances, delete it first.

  1. Open the conversation.
  2. Hover over your message and click the bin icon.
  3. Click Delete.

The message is removed for both of you and shows as "This message was deleted". You can delete your own messages at any time, not only before you delete your account.

How long data is kept

  • Your profile, settings, files and sign-in details are deleted or anonymised when you delete your account.
  • Messages you sent are deleted automatically 12 months after you delete your account. Until then, the person you spoke with can still read them.
  • The other shared records listed above are kept, without your personal details, for as long as the hiring team keeps them.
  • Billing records, such as invoices for a subscription you paid for, are kept for as long as tax and accounting law requires.
  • Aggregated or anonymised information that can no longer identify you may be kept.

Katara may also keep some information for longer where the law requires or allows it, for example for legal claims, security or fraud prevention.

For the full details, including the legal basis for each, read the data retention section of our privacy policy.
