Creating your engineer profile

Walk through the onboarding steps for engineers and learn what your profile completion score measures.

Your Katara profile is what hiring teams search and read before they reach out. Onboarding takes you through six short steps, and most of them can be skipped and finished later from your settings.

Choose how you want to use Katara

After you sign up, Katara asks how you want to use it. Pick I'm looking for work to start an engineer profile. If you also hire, you can add a recruiter account later.

The onboarding steps

The top of each page shows which step you're on. A preview of your profile card sits beside the form so you can see how recruiters will see you.

  1. Account. Enter your First name, Last name and a Username. Your username identifies you on Katara, and Katara tells you if it's already taken. Click Continue.
  2. About you. Add a Headline, a Tagline and an About you introduction. These are the first things recruiters read. Click Next: Professions, or Skip.
  3. Professions. Pick up to five roles that describe your work, then click Next: Skills, or Skip.
  4. Skills. Pick up to fifteen skills. Recruiters can search for these. Click Next: Location, or Skip.
  5. Location. Choose your Country, State/Province and City. Your location is used for pay comparisons and time zones. Click Next: Experience, or Finish Later to jump straight to the end.
  6. Experience. Click Import from CV to bring in your roles from a file, or click Skip for now and add them later from your profile. Once you've imported roles, the button changes to Continue.

If you leave part-way through, Katara picks up at the step you reached last time.

When you finish

The final screen confirms Your profile is live. It lists the professions and skills recruiters can now find you by, and a Your profile so far checklist showing which of these you've filled in:

  • Personal details
  • Professions
  • Skills
  • Location
  • Experience

From here, click Go to your dashboard or View your profile.

What profile completion means

Your dashboard shows a Profile strength card with a Completion percentage until you reach 100%. The percentage counts how many of these you've filled in:

  • First name, last name and username
  • Headline, tagline and the About you introduction
  • A personal website
  • Salary currency, a minimum salary and a maximum salary
  • Remote preference and seniority
  • At least one code hosting link, such as GitHub or GitLab
  • At least one professional link, such as LinkedIn, X/Twitter or Stack Overflow
  • At least one spoken language

The card also shows up to three tips, such as adding a headline, linking your GitHub or adding a scheduling link. Katara picks the tips that will help recruiters find you most. Some tips go beyond the completion fields. For example, you may see a tip if your introduction is short or your profile hasn't been updated for a while.

Click Complete Profile to open your profile settings and fill in what's missing. When you reach 100%, the card disappears from your dashboard.
